2019 | 2021 |
The 2020 Formula 3 Championship, formally known as the 2020 FIA Formula 3 Championship, is the second season of the FIA Formula 3 Championship, and eleventh year of third tier racing under Formula One.[1] The season would be heavily affected by the 2020 Covid-19 Pandemic, which would delay the start of the season until 4 July after the original calendar had been wiped out.[1]
Run in support of the 2020 FIA Formula One World Championship, the 2020 F3 Season was to be staged across nine rounds and eighteen races on the revised schedule, beginning with two meetings at the Red Bull Ring in Austria.[1] F3 would then go on to support the first nine F1 Grand Prix of the condensed season, before concluding on 13 September at the Mugello Circuit in Italy.[2]
Robert Shwartzman was the reigning FIA Formula 3 Champion having won the inaugural championship in 2019, and was one of six drivers from the 2019 roster to be promoted into the FIA Formula 2 Championship for 2020.[3] His former team Prema Racing would open the season as the reigning Teams' Champions, and would hire an entirely new triumvirate of drivers for the 2020 season.[4]
Background
Calendar
The original calendar for the 2020 FIA Formula 3 Championship was released on 16 September 2019, featuring nine rounds all in support of the 2020 FIA Formula One World Championship.[5] Each meeting would see the F3 field complete practice, qualifying and two races, and was primarily focused on races in Europe to reduce operation costs.[5]
Primary Plans
The season was to open on 21 March in Bahrain, before a month long break as F1 completed its early season tour of Asia.[5] The series' would reconvene at Circuit Park Zandvoort in the Netherlands on 1 - 3 May for its first trip to the Netherlands, before heading to the familiar Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya a week later.[5] A two month break would then follow before F3 reappeared on F1's under-card, with the field assembling at the Red Bull Ring in Austria on 3 - 5 July.[5]
The annual trip to Silverstone was to follow on 17 - 19 July, before the field headed to the Hungaroring on 31 July - 2 August prior to the official summer break.[5] With summer over the field were then scheduled to race at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps on 28 - 30 August, ahead of the usual trip to the Autodromo Nazionale Monza on 4 - 6 September.[5] The season was hence set to conclude on 25 - 27 September at the Sochi Autodrom in Russia, with eighteen races across the nine meetings.[6]
Covid Contusions
However, after the Covid-19 Pandemic became a global affair in February 2020 the original calendar would be heavily affected, with the Bahrain meeting the first to fall on 13 March.[7] Less than a week later and both of the rounds scheduled in May, namely the trips to the Netherlands and Spain, were cancelled, as well as the planned test at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, after their respective Grand Prix were postponed.[8] The entire calendar was eventually scrapped at the end of March, with the series organisers entering negotiations with F1, F2 and the FIA to arrange a new calendar once the Pandemic eased.[1]
The revised calendar was released on 2 June 2020, and featured a far more compact schedule for the series due to the Pandemic, with all eight races running in conjunction with F1 and F2.[1] Indeed, the opening race was to be held at the Red Bull Ring on 3 - 5 July, with the series then remaining at the Austrian circuit for another meeting a week later.[1] A week after that the F3 field would be assembled at the Hungaroring, racing on 18 and 19 July, before heading to Silverstone for another pair of races.[1]
The Silverstone rounds would be held on 31 July - 2 August and 7 - 9 August, both using the full Grand Prix circuit after rumours of using alternate layouts.[1] That would be combined with a trip the Barcelona to form a second "triple header", before a two week break to prepare the cars for a trip to Spa-Francorchamps.[1] The Spa meeting was to be staged on the 28 - 30 August, before the field headed to Monza for the final round listed on the revised calendar on 4 - 6 September.[1]
Mugello Musings
At the second round of the season at the Red Bull Ring, it was revealed that the Mugello Circuit in Italy would host both F2 and F3 on 11 - 13 September.[9] That race would also serve as the finale for the F3 Championship in 2020, with the location post-season tests yet to be announced.[2]
