Johnny Edgar (born 13 February 2004 in Whitehaven, Cumbria, United Kingdom) is a British racing driver who competed in the 2022 FIA Formula 3 Championship with Trident.[1] A member of the Red Bull Junior Team, Edgar would step down from racing in FIA F3 after the opening round of the 2022 season, having been diagnosed with a medical condition.[2]

Edgar made his FIA F3 debut at the start of the 2021 season, having signed with Carlin Buzz Racing for the full campaign.[3] The Brit would start the campaign with points in two of the first three races, although only three more scores across the remaining seventeen races would leave Edgar down in eighteenth in the Championship.[4]

Background[]

Edgar began his career in karting in 2012, having come from a line of racing drivers going as far back as his great-grandfather.[5][6] After winning a national title in the UK, and later the 2017 CIK-FIA European Championship in a field that included Zane Maloney and Jack Doohan, the British pilot earned a spot in the Red Bull Junior Team, alongside Doohan, Dennis Hauger and Harry Thompson.[5] In 2019 Edgar would move into single-seater racing, joining the Italian F4 Championship as well as competing in select rounds of the ADAC F4 Championship.[7]

F4 Steps: 2019 - 2020[]

Edgar would prove to be fairly competitive in his rookie season of F4, scoring two podiums and two pole positions in Italian F4 to end the season in tenth in the Championship.[7] 2020 saw Edgar reverse his programme focus, racing full time in ADAC F4 while running part-time in Italian F4 due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, with the Brit duly claiming the German title by two points ahead of Jak Crawford.[7]

Formula 3 History[]

Edgar secured his first taste of an FIA Formula 3 Championship car at the end of the 2020 season, when the Brit was invited to test for MP Motorsport at the first post-season test.[8] After attending the second test with MP, Edgar would complete a semi-private test with Carlin Racing in December 2020, before being announced as one of their drivers for the 2021 season alongside Ido Cohen and Kaylen Frederick.[3]

Health Hinderence: 2022[]

For 2022, Edgar would secure a move to the defending Teams' Champions Trident for the season after compeleting the 2020 Post-Season Test with them, with Zane Malony and Roman Staněk joining him at the squad for the season.[1] The season started relatively quietly for Edgar, with the Brit finishing in the midfield in both the Bahrain Sprint and Feature races, having qualified in that region for the season openers.[9] However, after the round it was revealed that Edgar had been struggling with a health condition, before Edgar, Trident and the Red Bull Junior Team agreed that the Brit should withdraw from the Championship on 4 April 2022 ahead of the second round.[2]

Edgar was replaced for the rest of the season by the returning Oliver Rasmussen.[2]
